Potential Massage Benefits:

• A session of gentle touch won’t resolve the cause of the fever, but it often decreases the body temperature for a short time, just enough for the person to have a break from the discomfort of a fever.

• Social isolation often occurs during a fever. The gentle presence of a massage therapist can provide needed human contact.

Hand-Foot Syndrome

Hand-foot syndrome (HSF) is a skin reaction, usually on the palms of the hand and sometimes on the soles of the feet, that is caused by certain chemotherapies.

• capecitabine (Xeloda)

• cytarabine (Cytosar-U)

• doxorubicin (Adriamycin)

• floxuridine (FUDF)

• fluorouracil (5-FU, Adrucil)

• idarubicin (Idamycin)

• liposomal doxorubicin (Doxil)

• pazopanib (Votrient)

• sunitinib (Sutent)

• sorafenib (Nexavar)

• vemurafenib (Zelboraf )

Hand-foot syndrome, also known as palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia, is not to be confused with peripheral neuropathy. HFS is characterized by skin that is red, swollen, blistered, cracked, tender, or painful and can also be accompanied by numbness or tingling. Mild HFS is not overly problematic. In its severe form, however, it is extremely painful when walking or using the hands. The skin can break down, causing easy entrance for the microorganisms that cause infections.

massage adjustments

Pressure:

• If HFS is mild, gentle pressure is usually tolerated.

• Patients will tolerate massage to the hands and feet after the first round of chemo, but after two or three rounds, those areas should be avoided.

Site:

• Do not massage areas that are moderately or severely affected: the skin is too fragile.

• Heat and cold should not be applied.

Positioning:

• Elevation of the affected area may provide some relief.
